Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)

SHIIP, a program of the Iowa Insurance Division, was created in 1990. SHIIP recruited local sponsors who in turn recruited volunteers. This has developed into a statewide network reaching out to help senior health insurance consumers. The program helps to educate the public through presentations to organizations and groups as well as through its many fact sheets and publications. It also provides free, confidential and individual counseling. Its trained volunteers can help older adults:

  • understand their Medicare benefits and rights

  • assess their needs so that they can make informed decisions about health insurance

  • compare and evaluate Medicare supplement and long term care insurance policies

  • organize medical bills, Medicare statements and file claims

  • find assistance from other agencies, including Medicaid, when or if it’s appropriate.

Heritage works closely with SHIIP sponsors in each of the Heritage counties where applicable.
